I hope all is well during these trying times. I figured some fishing news and reports would be welcomed. The Lake Lewisville Fishing Report-Early Spring is very good, but remember Spring is always a bit up and down. Fishing has been a little different than last year, and I wouldn’t expect it any other way. February was good, working for limits of white bass on some days. March has proven to be up and down like it usually is. It has warmed up earlier than it did last year, changing the pattern of the fish.  I’ve been apart of some special memories with some great people the past couple of months. From birthday celebrations to bachelor parties, to father-son time, to big groups of kids ripping lips, to old men keeping the dream alive, to being on the news, and it has all been a blessing. 

Catching Spawning White Bass-North Texas

In the DFW area, March usually is peak spawning time for white bass, hybrid stripers, and striped bass. The white bass I have been catching have had eggs since late November early December. A lot of these fish will go up the creeks in waves to spawn, while some spawn on the main lake. They are looking for the right conditions for a successful process…water flow and/or warmer water. Undoubtedly that’s where a lot of fish are at this very moment. Deep holes, bends in the creek or river, and slack water areas around log jams and brush are good areas to fish. Small jigs heads (1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 ounce size) with crappie sized swimbaits are great baits for this type of fishing. Little road runner type lures work well also.

The fish that remain on the main lake usually are found moving up into semi-shallow water (12-24 feet). I always prefer to catch the main lake spawners, because going up into creeks can get a little hairy with stumps, rocks, and sandbars right under the surface. These fish will usually be hugging tight to the bottom and show up as bumps on your sonar. They can sometimes be more difficult to catch because they have other things on their mind besides eating. Live bait, slabs/spoons, and small jigs work well for these fish. RSR lures makes some great slabs to catch these fish. Striped bass will make their way up the river, and hybrid stripers will go through a mock spawn as well. Rocks are a good area to check for hybrid stripers going through a mock spawn. Lake Lewisville Fishing Report-Early Spring

The fishing is getting better with the warmer weather! However, it’s still been a challenging winter and early spring on Lewisville. The water temperature was around 59-60 degrees as of Wednesday, 3-18-2020. That’s getting closer to the magical temperature, which is around 65 degrees. The water level is high, and parts of it are muddied up from the recent rains we’ve had. The keeper white bass I’ve been catching have been in 12-24 foot of water. There are still a lot of smaller white bass mixed in and out in the deeper water right now as well. Summertime and catching big hybrid stripers is right around the corner on Lewisville, and the way it has already started warming up makes me think it’ll happen earlier this year. The closer we get to May, the better the fishing will get! I spoke to a biologist from Texas Parks and Wildlife last week about the stocking of hybrid stripers on Lewisville. It did not get any hybrid striper stocking in 2019 due to a rough year in the fish hatcheries, however, it is number two on the list for 2020! Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report-Spring

Fishing has remained the most “consistent” on Lake Ray Roberts since my last report. We have had a few slower days, a few outstanding days, and some days in between, but we are catching fish every trip. These white bass are constantly on the move, and some times we have to cover a lot of water to get the job done. The past several days, the white bass have gone absolutely nuts. The water temperature is right around 60 degrees and rising. We have caught around 150 white bass per trip the past several days. There are some areas loaded with keeper white bass, and some are mixed with keepers and smaller fish. Most of the white bass I have been catching have not spawned yet, as they are still fat and full of eggs. I’m using the same techniques here as I am on Lake Lewisville. Jigs, slabs, and live bait. Some fish are on structure, and some are still suspended in the deeper waters around channels and deep water flats. I’m dead sticking the jigs for the suspended fish and bouncing the slab on the bottom for fish on structure. Both have produced fish here lately.
